Harris Picks Tim Walz as Running Mate

Harris has chosen Tim Walz, the current governor of Minnesota, man of deep Christian faith, a 24-year veteran, and a former football Coach of the state champions, to be her running mate in the 2024 presidential election. 

“What impressed me most about Tim is his deep commitment to his family: Gwen, Gus, and Hope.  Doug and I look forward to working with him and Gwen to build an administration that reflects our shared values,” said Vice President Harris.

Tim Walz is a devout Evangelical Lutheran and a member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in St. Paul. 

In his professional and personal life, Walz has always walked by faith. Perhaps the best example of this is when he and his wife, Gwen, faced fertility troubles and went through IVF treatment. 

“My oldest daughter’s name is Hope. That’s because my wife and I spent seven years trying to get pregnant, needed fertility treatments, things like IVF…”

Walz has consistently stood up for our shared Christian values of defending the vulnerable, protecting innocent children, supporting honest work, and caring for God’s creation through strong climate action. He’s responsible for Minnesota’s school lunch program that ensures every child is fed breakfast and lunch so that they can learn “with full bellies and clear minds” as he puts it. And he’s made sure Minnesota has the strongest Child Tax Credit in the country so that every child gets the basics at home too. 

Walz is deeply pro-family and pro-children. He signed paid family leave into law in Minnesota so that all parents can bond with their children in those precious first weeks of life. And he’s been an outspoken supporter of protecting IVF. 

Walz has also demonstrated his commitment to our veterans. Walz is a veteran himself, having served in the Army National Guard for 24 years before retiring as a command sergeant major. As a Congressman, Walz cleared bipartisan veterans’ suicide prevention legislation that became law in 2015.

Walz believes in the American Dream and the American worker. That’s why he stood up for workers in his home state by supporting fair wages and protecting family-sustaining union jobs. He also led the charge on removing college degree requirements for 75% of Minnesota state jobs with great bipartisan support.
