As Evangelicals committed to the well-being of American families, we strongly support Vice President Kamala Harris' newly proposed economic agenda. Her plans are rooted in principles that align closely with our faith and values, emphasizing the importance of family, community, and justice.
Vice President Harris has laid out a bold agenda for her first 100 days in office, with proposals that will significantly lower costs for American families. This agenda reflects a commitment to building up the middle class and ensuring that every family has the opportunity to thrive.
Jesus taught His followers that the main criteria He would use to judge us is what we do unto the least of these (Matt 25). This agenda reflects those priorities and is a positive step toward creating more just economic and tax systems.
Key elements of this agenda include:
$25,000 Subsidy for First-Time Homebuyers: Homeownership is a cornerstone of family stability and community building. This initiative will provide many families with the opportunity to create a secure and prosperous future, fulfilling the biblical call to care for our families and neighbors.
$6,000 Child Tax Credit for the First Year of a Baby’s Life: The Bible calls us to care for the "least of these," and this expanded Child Tax Credit is a tangible way to support new parents during the critical early stages of a child's life. It also restores the Biden-era Child Tax Credit that lifted millions of children out of poverty, exemplifying our shared commitment to nurturing the next generation.
Elimination of Medical Debt: The biblical concept of Jubilee calls for the release of debts and the restoration of dignity. Vice President Harris' plan to eliminate medical debt for millions of Americans is a modern reflection of this ancient principle, offering a fresh start to those burdened by health care costs.
Bans on Price Gouging and Caps on Prescription Drug Prices: These measures protect families from unjust practices that place undue financial strain on household budgets. The Bible warns against exploitation and calls us to pursue justice in all areas of life, including the economy.
Our initial thoughts? Vice President Harris’ economic agenda is a powerful expression of what it looks like to love and support American families. This is the kind of leadership we need—one that is pro-family, pro-community, and deeply rooted in the values we hold dear.
